July 14, 2002 -- An airline captain left a high-ranking Israel dignitary behind in San Francisco when "a communication breakdown" between security and the flight crew led to a heated standoff at the gate, The Post has learned.

Alon Pinkas, the Israeli counsel general in New York, and his wife, Ravital, were en route to San Francisco International Airport when his security team alerted the airport that a dignitary was arriving.

The detectives tried to persuade the pilot, who was "sweating," acting "nervously" - and who was overheard mentioning Pinkas' Middle East origin, according to Pinkas and foreign reports.

Actually, I don't believe I would want to fly on any plane with this particular pilot. Pinkas and his wife probably felt the same way after the fact.

I agree with you. I'm sure this pilot will be looking for a job with another company in the near future. Can you imagine? If this pilot gets this nervous on the ground, can you imagine how he'd be in the air with a real problem?
